Archive//X is built on a core set of epistemic and ethical commitments. These principles govern every decision about what to include, how to describe it, and how to communicate uncertainty. They are the foundation of the archive's institutional credibility.
Every claim must be traceable to source material
No field in Archive//X may be published without a link to the primary source from which it was derived. This includes a source ID, page number, and quoted excerpt. The trace from claim to source must be visible to every user. Inference without citation is labeled as such.
Uncertainty must be stated, not concealed
Confidence scores communicate real uncertainty. A score of 65 is not a failure — it is a truthful representation of what the evidence currently supports. Records should not be presented as more certain than they are. When evidence is ambiguous, that ambiguity is the substance of the record.
The archive serves the research, not the narrative
Archive//X does not advocate for historical interpretations. It structures evidence. The evidence may support multiple interpretations; that is the work of scholarship. The archive's responsibility is to present evidence faithfully, with clear sourcing, and with explicit acknowledgment of what is documented versus what is inferred.
Coverage limitations must be publicly disclosed
Archive//X does not pretend to be comprehensive. The Source Bias Explorer, dataset scope notes, and regional coverage documentation exist to help users understand where the archive is strong, where it is sparse, and whose perspectives are underrepresented in the available sources.
Stewardship is a responsibility, not a product feature
Archive//X preserves and structures records relating to some of the most consequential events in human history, including slavery, dispossession, labor exploitation, and political violence. This is a stewardship obligation. The archive must be maintained, corrected, and improved as scholarship evolves — not frozen at an arbitrary moment.
Contribution builds, not overrides, editorial authority
The community contribution system is a mechanism for improving the archive's accuracy and coverage. It does not substitute for editorial review. All contributions are reviewed before publication. The archive's integrity depends on the rigor of that review, not the volume of contributions.
Public-Interest Orientation
Archive//X is oriented toward the public interest. It prioritizes free access over monetization, source transparency over exclusivity, and accuracy over completeness. The archive makes its methods, limitations, and editorial decisions as visible as its data.
This is not altruism — it is the only coherent way to operate a historical evidence system. An archive that obscures its methods or refuses to acknowledge its limitations is not a research tool. It is a black box. Archive//X refuses to be a black box.

Long-term preservation
Archive//X records, source links, and version histories are maintained in perpetuity. No record is deleted — only versioned, corrected, or retired with a documented reason.
Methodological evolution
As extraction methods, OCR technology, and scholarly standards improve, Archive//X methods are revised and documented. Prior methods are preserved in version history.
Community and scholarly accountability
Editorial governance decisions, policy updates, and platform methodology changes are logged publicly in the changelog. The archive is answerable to its scholarly users.
Cross-institutional collaboration
Archive//X is designed to integrate with partner archives, universities, and cultural institutions. Collaborative provenance tracking is a design principle, not an afterthought.

Archive//X is designed to meet the research integrity, accountability, and governance standards expected by universities, major foundations, public archives, and cultural institutions. Every methodological decision is documented. Every editorial choice is traceable. Every dataset carries provenance, rights status, and scope documentation.
